Building the Future of Education: Inside UEA’s New Headquarters
In the heart of Murray, Utah, Forge Contractors is nearing completion on a transformative new home for the Utah Education Association (UEA) — a professional organization representing over 18,000 public school educators across the state. Designed to serve as both a workplace and a gathering hub, the new headquarters reflects UEA’s commitment to its members and to the future of public education in Utah.
From 1965 to Today: A Needed Transformation
UEA’s former headquarters, built in 1965, had weathered decades of use. Despite several remodels, the aging structure faced mounting issues — from ceiling leaks to outdated systems. After a cost review, UEA leaders determined that building anew was a smarter investment than modernizing the existing facility.
“Given UEA’s ownership of the property, the decision was made to erect a new structure in the parking lot,” explains Jennifer Boehme, UEA’s Executive Director. The project marks a new chapter in UEA’s history — one focused on modernization, sustainability, and accessibility.
Overcoming Challenges with Collaboration
Originally slated to begin in 2020, the project faced significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, through close coordination between UEA and Forge Contractors, the team adapted to new constraints without compromising the project’s goals. The collaboration exemplified flexibility, transparency, and shared purpose — principles that have defined the entire process.
A Space Designed for Connection and Inclusion
The new facility was designed to meet the needs of educators statewide. Features include:
A community room with flexible seating for up to 84 people
Multiple conference rooms equipped for hybrid meetings
Dedicated spaces for nursing mothers and gender-neutral restrooms
“With members spanning from Logan to St. George, it was important that the new facility supports hybrid participation,” says Boehme. “Educators from anywhere in Utah can now be part of meetings and events in real time.”
A Hub for Utah’s Education Community
Beyond serving UEA staff and members, the headquarters will host a range of education-focused organizations such as the Utah Public Education Coalition and Utah PTA. This collaboration reinforces UEA’s central role as a leader in education advocacy and professional development across Utah.
Built on Trust and Shared Vision
Forge Contractors approached the project with a client-first mindset. “We made sure to spend time with the UEA team before breaking ground,” notes Mike Buhler, Project Director at Forge. “Understanding the client’s goals is critical for a successful build.”
Boehme agrees: “Forge wanted to acquaint themselves with us before construction commenced. They really dug into how we intended to use the spaces — and that was crucial to getting the design right.”
This ongoing collaboration has ensured careful financial stewardship and a shared commitment to quality at every step.
Lessons That Shape the Future
The project has provided valuable insights for future educational builds — emphasizing inclusivity, flexibility, and thoughtful planning. “It encompasses collaborative teamwork, client education, and judicious financial stewardship,” adds Josh Anderson, Forge Contractors’ Superintendent.
Looking Ahead
As the new UEA Headquarters prepares to open its doors in May 2024, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved when vision and craftsmanship meet. More than a building, it’s a symbol of Utah’s investment in education — and a lasting legacy for the state’s teachers.
